It was built during the Bulgarian Renaissance period. The foundation of the windmill was made from the stone walls of a Byzantine church. The windmill itself is made from rough, dark lumber and has three floors. The first floor was used to store flour, the second floor that has a small balcony was a place where the miller’s family lived, and the third floor held windmill mechanisms that forced millstones to move. Thanks to strong winds coming from the sea, the windmill was always working. Nesebar was established near the end of the second millennium B.C. as the Thracian settlement Melsambria. The main activities of this tribe included agriculture and fishery. Somewhere in the beginning of the sixth Century B.C., the first Greek colonists from the city of Megara and its colonies came to the peninsula. They began to call the place Mesambria. The settlement grew to a city and began to develop; colonists began to build plenty of temples, ships and a theatre. They decorated their houses with statues of the honoured gods. By that time, a lot of crafts had developed, primarily metal working. The sea, however, was not the only defence of the city. Throughout the centuries, citizens had been constructing stone walls, which turned the island into an unconquerable fortress. This city security was started in the eighth Century by Thracians, who wanted to protect their settlement. Their wall was made from chiselled stones mixed with silt. They were built during the Sixth Century C.E. when Byzantine citizens learned how to build baths from the Romans and developed this ability to display in the city. A bath consisted of a vestibule, a central hall and warm rooms with pools. The water for the bath was supplied by the underground sewerage system. Coming through pipes, warm water created different temperature in different rooms. Clients of the bath were greeted with a truly luxurious experience and were given the chance to see the beautiful columns that supported the ceiling and the floor covered with marble. Take a closer look at the columns near the entrance – you can see fragments of the ancient marble columns’ foundations. The church is rather small and is half-dug in the ground. However, it could not be avoided during the time the church was constructed. On this day, shepherds took their herds to fields, where they accomplished rituals related to sheep welfare. Museum [description] => There are over 100 ancient houses from the Bulgarian Renaissance period in Nesebar. The buildings usually have two floors (less common – three floors). The first floor was made from stone and was not intended for living purposes. It was a place where fishing rods and house equipment were stored. Sometimes, there was a place for kitchen as well. The first and second floors were connected by tight, steep stairs. After going up, you could find yourself in a living room, which was situated in the centre of the floor, with rooms for house owners and guests to move around it. As the whole city was made from sandstone that could be damaged by the sun, wind or salt, stone houses were covered by wood [step] => 13 [trigger_zona] => 30 [link] => [time_of_work] => [ramp] => 0 [name] => Ancient buildings of Nesebar. Hello!
Welcome to Nesebar – a Pearl of the Black Sea.
This is one of the oldest cities in Europe and it is hard to imagine that it was built more than 5,000 years ago!
The city of Nesebar has two parts: the New City and the Old City. Today, we are going to explore the Old part of the city, which is situated on a beautiful peninsula.
Being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Nesebar is a very charming part of the city with narrow streets paved with cobblestones, the warm blue sea, wooden landmarks around every corner and, of course, the delicious smell from cosy restaurants that house marvellous views.
Let us begin our walk!
